Laurenz Berges
Laurenz Berges (born in Cloppenburg in 1966) lives and works in Düsseldorf. From 1986 to 1993, he studied communication design at the University of Essen, graduating with a diploma. From 1992, Berges studied photography at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and became a master student of Bernd Becher in 1996. His assistantship with the photographer Evelyn Hofer in New York City in 1988 and 1989 was particularly influential.
Berges produced the series Cloppenburg, 1989–90 during his studies and turned his attention for the first time to a subject: his home town of Cloppenburg. Alongside his main theme of the transience and identity of places, this work represents an initial exploration of his childhood and youth, as well as his own identity and origins.
Our archive contains 5 C-prints from the series Cloppenburg, 1989–90.
