David Hurn
David Hurn (*1934) was born in Redhill, Surrey, England and grew up in Cardiff, Wales. In the mid-1950s he began his career as a photojournalist at the Reflex Agency in London. He photographed in troubled areas, but also film stars, rock musicians, philosophers and poets. In 1967 he became a full member of Magnum Photos.
He was most concerned with observing ordinary, everyday life, which he captured on camera. In 1973 he returned to Wales and founded the School of Documentary Photography. There he began to follow a narrative-documentary approach that would add a more emotional dimension to the concept of storytelling through images. This respectful encounter between the photographed and the photographer became his trademark. Hurn lives and works in Wales and has inspired and trained generations of photographers.
"Life, as it unfolds in front of the camera, is full of so much complexity, wonder, and surprise that I find it unnecessary to create new realities. There is more pleasure, for me, in things as they are."
